Challenge

Ford Motor Company’s Daventry site includes a near 600m long warehouse. The unit has recently begun a major project to replace the existing asbestos roof with a newer, more efficient roofing system. During the project's inception, it was discovered that the entire roof suffered from a major pest issue with various species of birds using the vast area for nesting. To quantify the scale of the issue, an extensive roof survey needed to be completed to document and detail the extent of the damage caused, and to quantify the number of nesting sites located throughout the circa one million square feet of roof area.

Due to the asbestos material present throughout the roof area, a walkover survey was not a viable option. Wide horizons was therefore asked to carry out a video survey of the entire roof area, which could then be used to confirm the numbers of nesting birds involved and detail the extent of remedial work required.

Solution

A Wide Horizons operation team was tasked with capturing the video survey footage. The roof was firstly segmented into various flight paths, to ensure all roof sections were included. Two safe areas for take-off, landing and operation were then agreed, once complete Wide Horizons then worked closely with the sites management team, and principle contractors, to ensure a safe working environment for all involved around the extremely busy site throughout the time of the survey.

Results

The finished survey provided detailed video survey footage of over one million square feet of asbestos roof area. The use of the Wide Horizons team and UAV technology, resulted in the need for persons to walk the roof area to be removed altogether and the result of this is a dramatic decrease in the health and safety concerns traditionally associated with this type of work. The aerial survey was completed within one day, and no disruption was caused to the day to day running of the site itself. In comparison to traditional methods, the project was completed in a far more effective; quicker, and most importantly safer way.
